OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR - SOCCEROO LEGEND ERNIE CAMPBELL
The story of one of Ernie Campbell, ex-Socceroo and co-founder of APIA Legends FC, whose love of football and community helped bring this group together.

THE STORY OF ERNIE CAMPBELL

APIA LEGEND & SOCCEROO PIONEER
Ernie Campbell links the proud history of APIA Leichhardt with APIA Legends today. Born in Sydney in 1949, he became a talented forward during a key era for community football. His journey from local pitches to the international stage reflects APIA’s strength and Australian football’s rise.
APIA TO CHELSEA | A RARE PATHWAY
Campbell’s talent was recognised during Chelsea FC’s Australian tour in 1965. At just 15, he was offered an apprenticeship by manager Tommy Docherty — a rare opportunity for an Australian player at the time. His experience in England exposed him to the professionalism and standards of the European game.

APIA LEICHHARDT | TALENT MEETS TRADITION
Returning to Australia, Campbell joined APIA Leichhardt at 17 and became part of one of the country’s most respected clubs. A memorable moment came in a grand final replay against St George when Campbell scored a dramatic late hat-trick to secure a famous 3–2 victory for APIA.
SOCCEROO & WORLD CUP TRAILBLAZER
Campbell’s club performances earned him national recognition, and in 1971 he made his debut for the Socceroos. Over his national career he earned 24 caps and scored three goals, which secured his place in Australia’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in West Germany in 1974, the nation’s first appearance at football’s greatest tournament and a milestone moment for Australian football.

DOMESTIC LEADERSHIP & NSL ERA
Beyond his time at APIA, Campbell enjoyed a distinguished domestic career playing for clubs including Marconi Stallions, Sydney City, and St George. Competing during the early years of the National Soccer League, his performances made him a respected figure both on and off the field.
AN APIA LEGACY
Ernie’s connection to football has endured long beyond his professional playing days. He has remained actively involved in the game for decades, continuing to represent Australia in veterans’ competitions and staying connected to the football community. His story reflects the enduring legacy of APIA Leichhardt and the values that continue today through Apia Legends—community, passion, and a lifelong love of the game.
